World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 — Changing the Narrative on Suicide

By September 10, 2025No Comments

Today, 10 September 2025, marks World Suicide Prevention Day. The global theme: “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”—encourages a shift from silence to dialogue, from stigma to awareness, and from isolation to connection.  It’s a call for open conversations, compassionate responses, and shared commitment to mental health and life.

Why I am an advocate of suicide prevention:

I want to share something personal. In 2005, I truly believed the world would be better off without me. I was drowning my sorrows, was out of control and tried to take my own life. For my own safety, I was placed on suicide watch in St. Patrick’s Psychiatric Hospital. I felt completely lost in life and was totally ashamed by what I had done.

However, being in there, alone and scared, was also the moment I had a revelation. I had nowhere to run, I couldn’t hide from my pain, and that was when I had my moment of awakening. I knew I could no longer continue on the path I was on. Even though I couldn’t see any other paths on the horizon at that time, something inside me, maybe a sixth sense or hope, reassured me that it would all be ok. Out of the darkness came the light; a small spark of motivation was all it took for me to find the courage to change the narrative and get my life onto a new path.

Change didn’t happen overnight, but I made a daily promise to myself—not to go backwards. I wanted more than survival—I wanted a life worth living. And day by day, step by step, with the help of mentors, books, podcasts and personal development, I began to build that life.

Why Does Today Matter — Globally & Locally

Globally

  • The purpose of World Suicide Prevention Day is to shine a spotlight on suicide prevention and unite communities worldwide around the belief that suicides are preventable.
  • Samaritans UK & Ireland remind us that suicidal thoughts can be interrupted. Their research shows:
    • 60% of people with lived experience had their suicidal thoughts interrupted by someone close to them.
    • 14% were helped by total strangers.
  • Every community interaction matters—because sometimes, the smallest act of care can become someone’s lifeline.

In Ireland

  • The HSE is encouraging five key actions this year: Reach Out and Check In • Your Words Matter • Be Safe Online • Let’s Talk About Suicide • Know Where to Get Help.
  • Ireland’s iconic Darkness into Light continues to remind us every May that community, hope, and connection save lives.

Tough Times Are Human — But You Don’t Have to Face Them Alone

Everyone goes through dark times—that’s part of being human. But you don’t have to endure them in silence or isolation—even for years.

Admitting you need help is not a weakness—it’s one of the bravest acts you can take. It opens the door to healing, to connection, and to rebuilding your life.

Look out for others. While we are busy and trying to row our own boat, look up now and again and ask another human: Can I help you? A kind word might change someone’s life. You never know the impact you might have on another person in their hour of need.

You Are Not Alone

If you’re reading this and feeling like all is lost—please remember:

  • Help is out there. You are not alone. Your life matters.

If you’re in Ireland and need someone to talk to:

  • Samaritans Ireland: 116 123 (24/7)
  • Pieta House: 1800 247 247 (24/7)

If you’re elsewhere, check your local crisis lines. Someone is waiting to listen.

Final Thought

I was once convinced the world would be better off without me. Today, I know that recovery, growth, and meaning are possible. Dawn always comes after the darkest moments.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s pledge to notice each other, to speak to others and listen for the answer, the real one. Let’s change the narrative—because every life matters. Especially yours.

Today’s to-do list: Send that message, make that call, or share a kind word. You never know how much it could mean to someone in their hour of need.
